Is this the best new home near Austin, Texas? It might be. Castle Rock’s Gold Series home in Sunfield is over 4,000 square feet with five bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a movie room, two balconies and one of my favorite primary bathrooms I’ve toured all year. Here’s the full walkthrough with my honest pros and cons.

Key takeaways
- The Gold Series is Castle Rock’s top-of-the-line series: 4,000+ square feet, five bedrooms, 3.5 baths, two stories.
- Builder pricing is often more aggressive near year-end, and if this home sells, you can still build the plan.
- The primary suite is downstairs with a soaking tub, separate vanities and two closets.
- Upstairs has a huge second living area, a movie room and two balconies.
- It’s on a flat 60-foot lot backing to a quiet neighborhood road, not other backyards.
What makes the Gold Series different?
Castle Rock has three series, and the Gold Series is the top one. What I like most about this builder is that they’re a construction company first. On the Gold Series, the superintendent who builds your home stays with you through your warranty, so he has every reason not to cut corners. That’s not something you hear from every builder.
What’s the first floor like?
You walk in to a small powder bath and a grand staircase with a landing that overlooks the entry. It honestly feels like a theater balcony. The laundry room is right there too, and the primary suite is tucked down the hall (I’m saving the best for last).
There’s a formal dining area you can use as a dining room, a sitting room, or a cozy spot with a record player. Your call.
The kitchen
The kitchen is bright white and very neutral, with soft-close cabinets and no glass uppers, which I actually love. You’re not staring at your dishes all day.
Right now there’s no cabinet hardware, and I’d add some. Without handles it can feel a little bland. Two tips:
- Don’t install the handles yourself. If even one is slightly crooked, it’ll drive you crazy forever. I have a guy, and it’s not that expensive.
- My favorite handles are from Wayfair and they’re only a couple dollars each.
One thing I’d ask the builder about: where the trash goes. A pull-out trash drawer in the island makes life so much easier.
The butler’s pantry and pantry
I love a good butler’s pantry. It’s where the Instapot and coffee maker live so they’re not all over your counters. (An Instapot is never the prettiest thing.) There’s also a good-size walk-in pantry, and there’s a second casual dining area off the kitchen.
The living room
The living room is a great size, and the fireplace goes all the way to the ceiling. If you build this plan, you can always switch the fireplace to something more modern. What do y’all think? Keep it classic or go modern?
What’s upstairs?
I love the carpet on these stairs. Downstairs looks polished, and upstairs feels cozy. Here’s what’s up there:
- A bedroom with its own balcony. Great as a guest room or office, and perfect for a glass of wine outside at night.
- Big closets in most of the bedrooms. Let’s all feel the love for big closets. One bedroom has a smaller closet, which works great as a guest room.
- A shared bathroom with one sink. If you’d want two, ask about it when you build.
- A huge second living area with another balcony. Movie nights, game nights, parties. This room is giant.
- A movie room you can close off for a dark room and a little peace and quiet.
I also love that the upstairs railing has vertical balusters. They look clean and they’re much harder to climb than horizontal railings.
Heads up: these ceilings are ginormous, which Castle Rock does a lot. Tall ceilings look amazing but they echo, so plan on rugs, carpet and furniture to soften the sound. With my four kids, I know all about a loud house.
What’s the primary suite like?
Ok, my favorite part. The primary bedroom is downstairs with a tray ceiling and enough room for a king bed and a sitting area.
The bathroom is just about perfect:
- Separate vanities, which I’m a huge fan of, plus a super long vanity area.
- A real soaking tub, not a tiny one.
- A separate toilet room.
- A gorgeous shower with green tile running all the way to the ceiling. I always say tile to the ceiling makes a bathroom so much more luxe, and this one proves it.
- Two walk-in closets. One is a good size, and the other is basically its own room. Add a vanity and a wine fridge and you’ll never leave. (I’ve wanted a closet like that since Clueless.)
What’s the backyard like?
The home sits on a 60-foot lot. The house is big, so the yard is a little smaller, but it’s flat and there’s a huge back patio. Best part: there are no neighbors behind you, just a quiet neighborhood road.
Roads like that don’t make me nervous. A busy street would, because it hurts resale. And in a lot of big communities around Austin, you can end up with five neighbors looking into your backyard. Give me a neighborhood road all day.
My honest take
I love this house. My house is too small, so this one had me dreaming a little. The build quality, the ceilings, the upstairs living space and that primary bathroom make this one of the best new homes I’ve toured near Austin. I’d add cabinet hardware and ask about a second sink in the upstairs bath.
It’s also the end of the year, which is when builders tend to get way more aggressive with pricing. If you’re not ready to buy right now, that’s totally fine. We can make a plan, and you can build this plan next year.
And if you want to see it in person, I have the key and can even show you at night. Seeing a home at night gives you a totally different feel, and you can check for any glaring lights.
